Student Loan Debt, Family Support, and Reciprocity in the Transition to Adulthood

This study explores student loans, family support, and reciprocity during the transition out of college into adulthood. We examine experiences financial assistance co-living among students graduates with whether support systematically differed by loan presence. conducted four waves qualitative interviews loans at two public universities, in their senior year annually for three years after graduation ( N=24 participants, 72 interviews), collected rounds survey data undergraduates N=3251) 15 months N=176) from same universities. Financial living was common. Those gave more money to family, even when they did not live them. Interviews revealed that reciprocity, or expectations help return received, could be burdensome.
